Sitting on top of the world...
Wayzata, MN
I've been a member of the Twin Cities community for over 20 years, and by far one of my favorite residences was in the St. Anthony Park neighborhood of St. Paul. I shared a home with one other woman; it was her family home, her grandmother's home. Her grandmother could no longer live there, so the granddaughter was caring for it. It was a fabulous home, warm, inviting, and nestled high on a hill, a boulevard, around the corner from Mufuletta and Taste of Scandinavia. It was like living in a tiny town in the middle of two large cities; everything was within walking distance -- the post office, the dry cleaners, the bookstore, the library, the auto garage, the grocery store, the gift shops, the bakery -- everything. I loved it. It is still one of my favorite neighborhoods to toodle around in, wistfully remembering my days as a resident. But one of the most spectacular things about that home was the view from my bedroom windows: from one, I could see the skyline of downtown St. Paul, and from the other, the skyline of Minneapolis. Astounding. Every day, I would at some point lean into each window and marvel at the sensation of being on top of the world -- feeling like the entire city...cities...were at my fingertips. Anything possible, from end to end, everything within reach. Everything. And I could see it all from my bedroom windows: here, in this cozy, quiet, history-filled home, in this small town tucked into the big city, above the noise and fray of any crowds, two large twins were visible, separate but one, standing tall in their distances, silently bustling about on either side of me, and here I was in the middle. Right in the middle of it all.
